Universal Tower Defense Z Tier List (Update 4.0)

All 115 units, S+ down to D. Sort by tier, element or role, filter to what you can actually build, and every row opens a full unit page. The method is at the bottom, including where our sources contradict each other.

TL;DR
19 units at S+ and 37 at S, out of 115 ranked. 44 arrived with Update 4.0. Two things the badges do not tell you and this page does: the bracket in a unit name is its evolution stage, not its rarity, and role is placement, so a team of six S+ units that all want the same tile loses to a map rather than to a wave. No damage numbers here, because nobody has published any and we have not measured them.

The sortable table

Three filter rows and four sortable columns. Filter to Hill DPS and Ice and you will see how quickly the roster thins out.

Every tier as a board

Same units, read as a board rather than a spreadsheet. Both go to the same pages.

How we rank

Anyone can reprint a tier list. This is what ours rests on, including the parts that are not finished.

We did not build this ranking from scratch. Nobody honest does. Ranking from first principles means running every unit through the same wave with the same team and the same upgrades, and at 115 units that is months of play. What we did instead is start from the community lists, name them, and then tell you what we changed and why.

The sources. The spine is the post-Update-4.0 Pro Game Guides ranking, cross-checked against Destructoid. The new-in-4.0 flag is anchored against Deltia's pre-4.0 baseline from May 2026, which is why units that look new sometimes read false: they existed before the patch and merely gained a new top-end evolution. You are entitled to know which sources we used, because if this page agrees with those pages, that agreement is not independent confirmation. It is one source wearing two hats.

What we re-check. Placements get sanity-checked in game against current content. That is a check, not a measurement. It catches a unit that plainly cannot hold a lane at the tier it was given. It does not produce a damage figure and we do not pretend it does.

How supports and farm units are judged. A support is ranked on what it adds to a fixed damage core, never on its own output, and a farm unit is ranked on the economy it generates. 22 of the units here are supports. On a straight damage-led reading they would all sit lower than they deserve, and this is the one place we deliberately depart from the source lists.

What we refuse to publish. A stat, a summon rate or an acquisition method appears on this site only when a source states it. Tier, element, role, evolution label and Synchro are real and stated plainly. Damage numbers are not, anywhere, on any page.

Not verified yet. We have not run a timed damage test on any unit in this list. Not one. The tiers are inherited from the community lists and sanity-checked in play. The day we publish our own numbers, we will publish the wave, the team and the upgrade path they were measured on, so you can repeat the test and tell us we are wrong.

Ground, Hill and why it matters

The column most tier lists do not even print.

RoleUnitsWhat it means when you build
Ground DPS49Ground tiles only. The most crowded role in the game, and the reason a top-heavy team runs out of places to stand.
Hill DPS16Raised spots only. Hills are scarcer on most maps, so a hill unit competes for a rarer resource than its badge suggests.
Hybrid DPS16Either kind of tile. The flexibility is quietly worth a tier on its own, because a hybrid fills whatever hole the other five left.
Support22Buffs the damage core rather than doing damage. Undersold by every damage-led list, including the ones we started from.
Farm2Generates resources during a run. Earns its slot while your economy is the bottleneck and loses it when it is not.

This is the part of the game a tier list is structurally bad at. Six S+ units is not a team if four of them are Ground DPS and the map gives you two good ground tiles. The unit that saves that run is usually a Hybrid two bands lower, and no ranking that sorts by power alone will ever tell you so.

Filter the table above by role before you spend anything. If your box is stacked with Ground DPS, the highest-value pull available to you is a Hill or Hybrid unit you would otherwise have scrolled past.

Rarity is not the bracket

Two properties, one very expensive confusion.

Take Visionary (Unrivaled). Two things are going on in that name and most guides collapse them into one. Unrivaled is the evolution stage: which form of the unit you are looking at, reached by spending material. Rarity is a separate property the game tracks in its own field, with values including Mythic, Legendary, Epic, Secret, Exclusive. It describes how hard the unit is to obtain, not how far it has travelled up its own chain.

These come apart constantly. A high-rarity unit can sit at its base form. A lower-rarity unit can be fully evolved. Those are not the same investment: one wanted luck, the other wanted grind, and if you read the bracket as a rarity band you will spend gems on summons when what you needed was evolution material for something already in your box.

We flag the evolution stage on every unit page, and we do not print a rarity anywhere, for the reason below.

Not verified yet. We have confirmed the rarity field exists. We have not yet mapped it to every unit, so there is no rarity column on this table. An all-null column would imply we looked and found nothing, when the truth is we have not finished looking. What would close it: the in-game unit index, which shows a rarity against each entry, cross-checked against the summon pool listing.

Where our sources disagree

The part most tier lists quietly delete.

The lists we work from were made for different versions of the game. The pre-4.0 baseline predates the rename from Universal Tower Defense X to Z on 9 July 2026, the Synchro mechanic, and 44 of the units in the table above. A ranking made before that patch cannot have an opinion about Synchro, and Synchro is the mechanic most likely to make a unit-in-isolation ranking wrong.

Our rule where they conflict: the post-4.0 verdict wins, and the unit page says the placement was contested. That rule is not free. The older list had months of play behind it and the newer one had days. We chose recency over accumulated evidence because a renamed game with a new pairing system is, in the ways that matter to a tier list, a different game. You are entitled to disagree with that call, which is why we are telling you we made it.

Where they conflict most: the middle bands. A and B are where two reasonable people looking at the same unit reach different letters, and where our own re-checks are thinnest. The top and the bottom are stable. Treat A and B here as an opinion with a source, not a measurement, and check the element and role columns before you take the letter seriously.

For a single unit, the unit index carries the same caveats page by page, and each unit states its own testing status in plain words rather than a badge.

Questions people actually ask

What is the strongest unit in Universal Tower Defense Z after Update 4.0?
The 19 units at S+ are the honest answer, because any of them clears current content and we have not measured damage on any of them. If you want a single name to chase, Human Spider (Responsible) is the one we would chase, and not for its damage. It is the only unit in two separate Fuse pairs, which means it can merge with either Symbiotic Alien or Iron Billionaire depending on what else you pull.
Where does this tier list come from?
The spine is the post-Update-4.0 Pro Game Guides ranking, cross-checked against Destructoid, with the new-in-4.0 flag anchored against Deltia's pre-4.0 baseline from May 2026. We re-check placements in game. Where sources disagree we keep the post-4.0 verdict and say so, because 4.0 renamed the game, added Synchro and reshuffled the roster, so a pre-patch ranking is a ranking of a different game.
Does the bracket in a unit name mean it is rarer?
No, and this is the single most common error in guides for this game. The bracket, like (Ascension) or (Unrivaled), is the unit's evolution stage. Rarity is a separate property the game tracks in its own field, with values including Mythic, Legendary, Epic. A high-rarity unit can sit unevolved and a low-rarity unit can be fully evolved, and they are completely different investments.
What is the difference between Ground DPS and Hill DPS?
Placement, not power. Ground units take ground tiles, hill units take the raised spots, hybrids take either. We list 49 ground, 16 hill and 16 hybrid units. A team assembled purely from the top of this list can end up with four units fighting over the same lane, which is how a technically correct team loses to a map.
How often does this tier list change?
When the game does. Update 4.0 landed on 9 July 2026 and rewrote the top of the roster, and the next patch can do it again. The date at the bottom of this page is the last time we re-checked the placements, not the last time we touched the file. Those are different things and a lot of guide sites treat them as the same.
