Relics, the stat layer nobody has documented

TL;DR

Relics are the stat layer on a unit. They are rerolled with Stat Rerolls, also called Relic Rerolls depending on where you read it, and that stock is separate from Trait Rerolls.

Beyond that, the honest position is that relics are the least documented system in the game. We are not going to hand you a ranked relic table we have not verified. What we can give you is how the system behaves, where it touches the rest of your upgrades, and what to test yourself.

What a relic is

The stat side of the unit, and the second thing you can reroll.

A unit in this game carries a level, a trait roll, and a stat or relic layer. Relics are that third thing. They are rolled, they can be rerolled, and they change the numbers rather than the identity of the unit.

A mental model that holds up: traits are the flavour, relics are the numbers, Etherealize is the power, Evolve is the identity. Four different systems, four different resources, and the game does very little to explain which one you are looking at when you open a panel.

The naming mess

Stat Rerolls, Relic Rerolls, and why sources disagree.

The token that rerolls this layer appears as Stat Rerolls in some places and Relic Rerolls in others. As far as we can tell these describe the same stock, and the split is a documentation artefact rather than two separate currencies.

We flag it because it is a live source of confusion. If you are reading a guide that treats them as two different tokens, that guide has not opened the game recently, and you should weight everything else on that page accordingly. The one thing we are sure of is that the stat side and the trait side are not the same stock, which is the distinction that actually affects what you can do today.

Relics on a bench unit

The cheapest mistake in the game, and the one people repeat most.

Rerolling relics on a unit you do not field is close to free in real terms, since tokens regenerate through play, and that is exactly why people do so much of it. It feels productive. It is not costing shards. Nothing bad happens.

What it costs you is the roll you would have had on the unit you do field. Tokens are not infinite in the moment, only over time, and the moment is when you are stuck on a wave. Point the rolls at the six units on your board. Everything else can wait until it earns a slot.

What relics do not do

Three things people expect from them, none of which happen.

  • They do not change a unit's rarity. Rarity is a separate, fixed property of the unit, and no reroll touches it. If you have been treating the bracket label as rarity, read the Evolve page, because that mix-up runs deep and it changes how you spend.
  • They do not substitute for levels. A stat roll on an under-levelled unit is a rounding error on a problem you have not addressed. Levelling is free. Do it first.
  • They do not lock in. The relic layer is rerollable by design, which means a good roll today is not an asset you have to protect at the cost of everything else. Relax about it.

The state of relic documentation

Which is to say: bad, everywhere, including here.

Not verified yet. We do not have the relic stat pool, the value ranges, the roll weights, or what happens to a relic layer when two units fuse through Synchro. That is four of the five things you would want from this page, and we would rather say so than fill the gap with numbers that read well and mean nothing.

Here is what would move this page forward fastest, and you can do it in an evening. Take one unit, record its damage on a fixed wave, reroll the relic layer, record it again on the same wave. Ten data points from one player on one unit is a real sample. Zero data points dressed up as a stat table is what the rest of the internet currently has.

Questions players actually ask

What are relics in Universal Tower Defense Z?
The stat layer attached to a unit, rolled and rerolled with Stat Rerolls. They sit beside the Level, Etherealize and Evolve stack rather than inside it.
Are Relic Rerolls and Trait Rerolls the same token?
No. They are separate stocks. The naming varies between sources, which is where a lot of the confusion comes from, but the two systems draw on different tokens and you can be empty on one while flush on the other.
Which relic stat should I be chasing?
We have not verified the stat pool or the ranges, so we are not going to name one. The principle that holds in any tower defense is that a multiplier on the stat your unit already leans into beats a flat bump on a stat it does not use. Principle is not a substitute for a verified table, and we are not pretending otherwise.
Do relics matter more than levelling?
No. Levelling is free, and a relic roll on an under-levelled unit is decoration on a problem you have not fixed. Level first, always.
Do relics interact with Synchro?
Unknown, and it is the most interesting open question in the game. Seven of the nine confirmed Synchro pairs fuse the two units into a new one, so what happens to the relic layer of the two inputs is a genuinely unanswered question. If you have a fusion built, test it and tell us.
